They had only just reached home, and Geneva was removing the roast from the slow cooker where it had been cooking for much of the day, when her phone buzzed in her purse. Gerry was texting again.

So, big news, he had written. I think we might have figured out who Mavis’s friend Jack is. His name is Jack Elandis, and he’s a self-described ‘freelancer’ and ‘entrepreneur’ who was brought in for fraud a while back, though we couldn’t make the charges stick. Guy’s a real grifter.

After reading the text aloud to George (who had only just come in and taken his hat off) and Iris, Geneva wrote back, Do you want to interview him or shall I?

He’s all yours, if you want him, replied Gerry. Just be aware that he’s slippery and will probably try to talk you into investing in his scented candle company, or whatever he’s up to these days. He never met an old lady he wouldn’t try and sucker. I’ll check in with you later. I’ll likely question him, too.

“Well, this old lady isn’t having it,” said Geneva, and returning her phone to her purse she told Iris, “I hope you haven’t made any plans for tomorrow night. It looks like we have another assignment.”
